~ Heliconia ~

   Heliconia

A  genus of 200-300 species of large perennial herbs, mostly from Central and South America but with a few species native to the South Pacific (west to New Guinea). There are also many hybrids and cultivars. Some are only 3-4 ft high, others 20 ft tall or more. Leaves are medium-sized to large (up to 10 ft long in some species). Heliconias are closely related to both bananas and bird-of-paradise plants. Many Heliconia species have colorful stalks of bracts and flowers (red, orange, yellow, purple, pink). Heliconias are said to epitomize plants with a "tropical look." Both luxury hotels and Hawaiiaan residents use Heliconias to decorate for special occasions.
